When Your Body Knows Before Your Mind Does
Understanding How Anxiety Manifests Itself
Have you ever felt your heart racing before an important meeting, or your stomach tightening before a difficult conversation — even when you couldn’t explain why?
That’s anxiety speaking. And it often speaks through your body long before your mind has caught up.
Anxiety is incredibly common, yet it can feel isolating. Let’s talk about what it actually feels like — so you can start recognising it for what it is.
🌿 In the Body
When your nervous system perceives a threat (real or imagined), it activates fight-or-flight. In modern life, that “danger” is often a work email or a thought about the future — and your body doesn’t know the difference.
Common physical signs include:
- A racing heart
- Shallow breathing
- Muscle tension
- Stomach discomfort
- Fatigue and disrupted sleep
Many people carry these symptoms for years without connecting them to anxiety.
🧠 In the Mind
The body sounds the alarm — the mind runs the story.
Anxious minds are expert “what if” storytellers, looping through worst-case scenarios. This often shows up as:
- Difficulty concentrating
- A constant low-level sense of dread
- Irritability
- A need to avoid anything that feels uncomfortable
- Perfectionism — anxiety wearing a very productive disguise
🔁 The Loop Between Both
The body and mind are in constant conversation. A tense body tells the mind danger is here. An anxious mind tells the body stay alert. Each feeds the other.
This is why simply telling yourself to “calm down” rarely works. Lasting change requires working with both — understanding the patterns beneath the surface and learning to gently interrupt the cycle.
🌱 You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck
Recognising how anxiety shows up is already a powerful first step. And with the right tools, it is absolutely possible to change your relationship with it — not by eliminating it, but by learning to work with it rather than against it.
This is exactly what my coaching work is about. As an anxiety and mindset coach, I help people:
- Understand what’s truly driving their anxiety
- Build practical strategies for the hard moments
- Create the deeper mindset shifts that lead to real, lasting change
✨ If you’re ready to stop white-knuckling your way through each day, I’d love to connect!
